WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------- Lincoln-Douglas is the debate event for competitors looking to assess the moral, philosophical, and ethical components surrounding bi-monthly topics ranging from civil disobedience to nuclear proliferation. LD challenges debaters with deep, thought provoking questions— should we prioritize liberty over security? Is it morally justifiable to kill one person to save five? As the only event that allows debaters to compete one on one, LD is ideal for students who seek to debate independently, often developing and reading unique positions that can call attention to issues the debater is passionate about. Many students who compete in LD gain not only topic-specific education but also knowledge on the basics of philosophy and ethical decision-making. SPEAKER INFO ------------------------ Allison Hsu is a rising junior at Lynbrook High where she has been competing in LD debate since her freshman year. To her, speech and debate has been an opportunity to put the world under a critical lens and develop a better understanding of different political theories, moral philosophies, and key global issues. Her top three recommendations include grimdark fantasy novel The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang, crime drama Peaky Blinders on Netflix, and the song Where’s My Love by SYML. On a typical day, she can be found with her head buried in a novel, playing the guitar, or getting walked by her dog, Ranger.
